Sekororo: A taste of Sepedi Culture
Posted: March 22, 2012 Filed under: Garden Leave a comment »Each year around July the Sepedi boys and girls in Sekororo participate in the “coming of age” tradition. For two weeks they stay in the mountains above our house. At night one can see a line of camp fires burning in the mountain. This is the time when boys are circumsized and become men and girls enter into womenhood.
If you are birding in Sekororo during July you will find lines of boys in their traditional wear along the main roads. Feel free to stop and take pictures as they are very proud of their costumes. They are not allowed to talk but can respond to your questions with whistles.

Animal sightings in Kruger
Posted: March 13, 2012 Filed under: Kruger National Park Leave a comment »I believe birders actually see more animals than those looking for animals only. Maybe because our birding eyes are constantly looking for movement, colour and familiar shapes among the scrub, below and in trees and in the sky. Here are some animals I saw recently while birding in Kruger.

This Carmine bee-eater was sitting in the road so I couldn’t really miss it.
This beautiful European Roller let me come real close. The wind was playing through his powder blue feathers.
